Education, Science and Astronaut

I thought of other different things that I could enter this week .

Although I have a busy schedule this  week as I have some orders for pineapple tarts to be delivered, I still  wish to enter something that the younger  generation of today are beginning to show some interest  ie. to be astronaut. To be an astronaut one has to achieve high education level. Not many can become astronaut but there are still other streams of the aeronautical industry our children can excell . My son wanted to be Aeronautic Engineer when he was in  primary school (that was before Dato Dr Sheikh Muszaphar became astronaut). But now his interest has move to another science and engineering field. Well !, as long as he is interested  in science education let him decide his  ambition I still give him my full support even if he decides to switch into other soft skill engineering field.

Let me relate education to being an astronaut…..On 10 october 2007 Malaysia sent her first astronaut , Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al Masrie to the International Space Station with Russian crew members aboard Soyuz TMA-10. He returned to earth on 21st October 2007. Dr Sheikh Muszaphar had achieved excellent education achievements  in his student days.

The purpose of his flight is to do what no one has done before in space  with zero-gravity. The science research he carried out will not only benefit Malaysia but the whole world.  He conducted science experiments on the study of cells in space and its effect on microgravity and space radiation, the studies of microbes on mortility of bacteria and drugs resistance, protein crystallisation tests which involves experimenting  the crystal growth of lipases on earth in comparison with the microgravity in space, the quality of food whether some local dishes are suitable for consumption during space flight

The experiments on cells and microbes will benefit the studies of the characteristics and growth of liver cancer and leukemia. The protein crystallisation and lipases were designed to benefit local industries.

Before the departure of the first Malaysian astronaut from ” Program Angkasawan” was launched there were already mutual researches done between Malaysian and Russian scientists which evolves the Mars Exploration project.

The programme is also designed to instill the interest of young Malaysians to explore new areas of  science and technology  to sustain a long-term national competitiveness in a globalization era. Hence to meet the target we have to stress in good education level of achievement.
